Scoliosis is defined as a deformation of the Spinal column. This deformation  manifests itself in various forms with corresponding ills. On an x-ray you can see, that the deformation always is three-dimensional.  In about 80% of  the cases the cause is unknown and is referred to as “idiopathic”. Nevertheless, it has been scientifically proved that genetics play an important role in this condition. Females are more commonly affected, ratio 4:1 than the males.

The definition of scoliosis describes a progressive deformation of the vertebral column. Whenever this condition has been diagnosed it is advisable to commence treatment without delay. Therapy is most beneficial to the young during their developing years. The ultimate goal, in treating both young and elderly patients is to achieve, in each individual and depending on the degree of deformation, a stop to further deformity. With older patients the physiotherapist has to keep in mind, not only the prevention of further disfigurement but to employ methods to combat negative factors associated with scoliosis, such as pain, reduction of breathing volume and encumbrance of internal organs as well as reduction of the range of motion.

Recognition of Scoliosis

When examined from the back view the spinal column should appear straight.

If the spine looks more than an “S” or a “C” from the back view it could easily be a scoliosis.

Another means of identification is the so called “hump back”. This can be clearly observed when the patient is asked to bend over with arms at the side (Adam-Bending Test) All visible disproportion of the spinal column must be referred to a Specialist.
